Jan. 28 2008 update

Tuesday Jan. 28,

This past weekend The Underpants opened. It did much better at the box office than I had anticipated. I was ready for cold weather and an unknown show title to keep away many of our regular theatre goers. It was a delightful surprise to see the show had sold out for Saturday evening. Steve Martin has a bigger fan base than we anticipated. The cast and crew are doing a great job.

Last night was the Charity League follies first rehearsal. This years show is HAVE A NICE DAY The 70's Flashback musical. Originally written for 5 people our cast will be closer to 60 people. We have split out lots of the songs and will be doing some big chorus dance numbers during the course of the show. It is always a daunting task to undertake a show like the Follies. It has such a community history. I hope that I can keep that spirit alive. I try to cast as many non Market House Theatre people as possible.

Leann Stilley is the Follies Chair this year and she has been working for about 6 months on this project already. In addition Leann has a beautiful voice and she will be singing some of the solos in the show. The performance will be March 29 at Paducah Tilghman Auditorium.

Crowns is in rehearsal and keeps making great progress. The cast along with Mary Jane Bowles as Director and Doug Arnold as Musical Director are turning out a great show. Harriet the Spy is also in rehearsal. Harriet is in the early blocking phases.

Tomorrow is the January Board meeting and lots of exciting things will be up for discusssion. Including a vote on some of the shows selected for our 45 Season which begins next July. Look for a special Preview night in March to announce our next season.

Alexis if off in Chicago attending the National Intix Conference for box office professionals. She gets back in Saturday and will be working the Sunday Show of the Underpants.

We are currently looking for crew people for Harriet the Spy. Contact Marsha Cash if you are interested at 270-444-6828 ext. 111.

January 17

Executive Director Michael Cochran's Blog
Jan. 17, 2008 The Underpants is in the final week of rehearsals before opening. Each night the cast takes big steps toward opening night. On Sunday afternoon we have the Technical Rehearsal which is the first time the actors put on costumes, there are lights, sound, and special effects. It's called a technical rehearsal because we stop and start for the technical elements in the show. If a costume change isn't fast enough we rehearse that part a couple of times until it can be done. Generally scene changes should take less than 30 seconds. It is amazing how long 30 seconds can feel to an audience sitting in the dark waiting for something to happen. Crowns is also in rehearsal. Musical Director Doug Arnold and Production Director Mary Jane Bowles have been working hard with the cast to create our first "Studio Musical". The play will perform in the studio theatre and this is our first attempt at doing a musical in that space. The studio theatre allows the audience to be no further than 10 feet from the actor. The closest audience members could with very little effort reach out and touch the actors. Last Monday and Tuesday April had auditions for Harriet the Spy. Over 60 youth auditioned. The cast list will be posted tomorrow (Fri.) Lots of anxious young actors are eagerly awaiting that posting. Last Saturday auditions for the Charity League Follies were held. A small but talented group turned out to audition. The announcement of that rehearsal start will also happen on Friday. Tonight is an Arts Advocacy Meeting sponsored by all of the Paducah Arts Groups. It will be held at the Museum of the American Quilters at 6:30. I will be leading a presentation on how to get involved in being an advocate for the arts in local and state funding. Our big grant application was mailed off today. That is always about a 2 week project that is nerve wracking trying to present all the things we do in just a few words. We will keep our fingers crossed on that until we hear back in May or June.
